Wayne's DiGravio makes states with former style

HENRIETTA - Vinny DiGravio was a Division I state champion last season, but the Wayne 145-pounder felt he needed to make adjustments.

"This year I tried a new stance, tried to do different things but it started to not work for me," DiGravio said.

Pittsford's C.J. Howard, left, flips around Greece Olympia's Joe Bonaldi on his way to an ultimate tiebreaker win in the finals of the 135-pound class in Division I.
A loss to Spencerport senior Paul Morabito during the Section V Class A final last week helped convince DiGravio that adjustments needed an adjustment.

"I decided to go back to going all out than trying to be defensive and going slow."

DiGravio received a reminder from a Wayne assistant coach to stay on the go after the semifinals of the SuperSectionals and beat the clock with a takedown late to edge Morabito 4-3 in the final at the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday.

"I wasn't wrestling to my potential," DiGravio said. "(Teammate) Bobby and Al Dierna started to fire me up, they said 'You can win states again.'

"Bobby will win states (at 130 pounds) and Al should (at 103). I'm going to be up there with those two."

The trio from Wayne were among 30 wrestlers who earned spots in the state wrestling championships in Albany, Feb. 26-27.

Wrestlers who did not win their weight division can still advance to states, if they fit the criteria to receive a wild card.

Pittsford's C.J. Howard trailed Greece Olympia's Joe Bonaldi with three seconds remaining in the 135-pound Division I final. Howard evened the score with an escape, and went on to win 5-4 after three overtime periods.

Palmyra-Macedon junior Ben Mowry, the 130-pounder in the lineup of the No. 1-ranked Division II team in the state, might have had to sit and wait until next week for an invitation to the state championships.

Mowry trailed South Seneca's Ian Wagner 2-0 with about 25 seconds left, but managed to flip his opponent on to his back to go ahead. Mowry then pinned Wagner with one second remaining.

"I don't even know the name of it," Mowry said of the winning, multiple-point move. "I hit that same move in a match earlier this year.

"I was trailing by two with about 20 seconds then. I figured I'd try to hit it again."

A few folks Mowry knew, and maybe some he didn't, hugged and patted him on the back.

"This is the best feeling in the world."

Holley sophomore Quinton Murphy became a four-time qualifier for states after his 55th win in 56 matches this season.. Murphy, who sported purple-colored hair, has placed sixth, first and second at the season-ending meet.

"Last year I didn't do as well as I wanted to," Murphy said. "I've been training all the more harder because of it.

"I'm doing everything not to blow it. ... I had pretty big expectations."

James Sauerban and two teams were presented awards before the finals.

Sauerban, the former Kendall varsity coach and athletic director, received the Terry Robert Justice Memorial Award in recognition of his service to high school wrestling.

The teams at Attica in Division II and Brockport in Division I were presented the Earl Fuller/Frank Marotta Sportsmanship Awards.
