Fairport, N.Y. — The stage was set - the battle between the Pittsford and Fairport wrestling teams had gone back and forth and the team scores were tied 29-29 entering the final match.

The Panthers Kenton DeCross weighed in at 220 pounds entering the dual, but was moved up to the 285 class against Dakota Taylor for the Raiders. The size difference was apparent. The first period was scoreless, with neither wrestler able to earn the takedown and first points. DeCross’ choice was bottom and he met the challenge by escaping the grasp of Taylor in the first minute.

Pittsford's Kenton DeCross, right, defeated Fairport's Dakota Taylor 1-0 at 285 pounds during to give the Panthers the dual meet victory earlier this week at Fairport.
No more points were added in the second but some great attempts were made by both wrestlers to make the period a true nail biter. Taylor chose bottom to begin the third and DeCross had to keep him down to maintain his one-point lead.

As it started DeCross went to work breaking him down and flattening him out. Working the ankles, cross face, and tight waist, all the tricks came out in the final two minute battle.

Throughout the period Taylor made attempts to escape and was relentless, but as the clock ran out and the crowd exploded, DeCross had proven to be the better wrestler and sealed the victory for the Panthers 32-29.

“Kenton has a heart bigger than most men I know,” said Jason Bovenzi, Pittsford head coach. “He was given the choice to move up a weight class to help the team. Kenton accepted the challenge and with the pressure on, delivered victory for the team.

“I never expected it to come down to the last match but with Kenton being the wrestler we needed at crunch time, I expected nothing but his very best effort. Our guys came out tonight and fought hard. We had some unfortunate situations which resulted in some losses but as a team these guys left it all out there and really demonstrated the quality of wrestlers we have in the Pittsford program this year.
